Other grains
Oats are used chiefly as livestock feed, some are processed for human consumption, especially as breakfast foods.
Rye is chiefly used to make rye bread and rye whiskey. It is high in carbohydrates and dietary fibre and provides small quantities of protein, potassium, and B vitamins. Rye is also used as livestock feed, as a pasture plant, and as a green manure crop that is plowed under to improve the soil.
Millet is being cultivated for their small edible seeds. Although they are used chiefly for pasture or to produce hay in the United States and western Europe, they remain important food staples in developing countries worldwide.
Sorghum likely originated in Africa, where it is a major food crop, and has numerous varieties, including grain sorghums, used for food; grass sorghums, grown for hay and fodder; and broomcorn, used in making brooms and brushes.
